Drafts and Drums

Tickets to Drafts & Drums on the Drag are now on sale. The event features three bands, eight local breweries and a vintage car show in an open-air festival fundraiser on the Bremerton drag strip. The Sept. 30 event runs from 2 to 8 p.m. and kicks off with an opening ceremony saluting the community’s soldiers.

The Sept. 30 event features craft beer pours from eight local breweries and live-music performances from three distinctly Northwest bands, including:
·         Knucklehead, a classic rock power-trio based out of Bremerton
·         Ben Union, a Seattle-based band featuring R&B, Soul & Alternative Rock music
·         Hell’s Belles, an all-female AC/DC tribute band from Seattle

The event will be held on the Bremerton Motorsports Park drag strip, which is located on an inactive runway adjacent to Bremerton National Airport. The runway was used by the U.S. Navy during World War II and became a home to auto sports in Kitsap County in 1960.

To learn more about the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation, go to www.PTSDfoundation.org

Leaders, veterans and family members behind the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation want to change the post-traumatic stress discussion to an effort focused on post-traumatic growth.

The foundation is launching a new program that cultivates and facilitates post-traumatic growth in warriors coming home from war. Their program will get a funding boost to fuel expansion from the Sept. 30 Drafts & Drums on the Drag event.

“It’s all about reintegrating back into society,” says Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation board member and veteran Mikey Traugutt. “Now that you’ve led in combat, why not come home and lead in the community and in business.”

The Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation is working with the Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont, VA, to bring their Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes) program to Washington state. The Virginia program is the nation’s first non-clinical program to help those with post-traumatic stress disorder, enabling them to transform times of struggle into strength and growth.

Taught by a blended team of trained combat veterans and civilian instructors who have walked the road from struggle to strength, small groups of veterans participate in an intensive, seven-day training retreat.

“Trauma doesn’t discriminate,” says Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation President Leslie Mayne. “Most of the programs start with what is wrong with you. The Warrior PATHH program is a totally different way to respond. It has transformed the lives of participants, helping them reclaim their lives.”

“We’re not waiting for the Veterans Administration to solve this problem for our warriors. Our broader community needs to be part of the solution now. We need our warriors back home in our communities,” she says. Mayne and board member Mickey Traugutt have been to the Virginia retreat center to see first-hand the power that the program has in transforming the lives of warriors returning home.

“For me, it was life-changing,” Traugutt explains of his recent participation in a Warrior PATHH retreat at Boulder Crest in Virginia. He attended the retreat with the intent to become a trainer in the program, continuing his service to fellow veterans, but ended up getting much more from the experience in his own journey after active duty military life.

“Any veteran that goes through the program is definitely going to come out with something that makes their life better,” Traugutt says. “When they come out better, their families are better and their communities are better.”

The first retreat offered by the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation will start in late September at a rented retreat center not very far from the foundation’s home in Gig Harbor. Foundation leaders hope to eventually host the retreats at their own retreat center.

Part of the proceeds from the Sept. 30 music and beer festival will go toward funding additional retreats in 2018. In addition to the classic cars, food and end-of-summer fun, the festival will provide a stage for the foundation to raise awareness of their new program and inspire hope. Foundation leaders will be on hand at the festival to share their story.

“We’re honored to help provide a broader stage for the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation and the important work they’re doing for our community’s warriors,” said event organizer Brian Nilsen of Bremerton Motorsports Park and Circuit of the Northwest.

THE CHINOOK ARE COMING, THE CHINOOK ARE COMING!!

The Suquamish Tribe, in cooperation with the Port of Bremerton, wishes to inform all marina residents, visitors and waterway users to anticipate commercial net fishers exercising their reserved right to fish in and around the waters of Port Orchard & Sinclair Inlet.

Fisheries managers are expecting a return of 4,800 harvestable Chinook back to Sinclair Inlet waters in 2016.

The Suquamish Tribe, in cooperation with the Port of Bremerton, wishes to inform all marina residents, visitors and waterway users to anticipate commercial net fishers exercising their reserved right to fish in and around the waters of Port Orchard & Sinclair Inlet.  Treaty Indian fishing may begin as early as Sunday, July17, and continue until mid-September, with the most active period occurring during the month of August.  Nets are most often fished during the night-time hours and so boaters should be alert for nets strung along the surface of the water with small white corks and flanked by larger, often orange to red-colored floating buoys. During nighttime activity, nets will also be marked by floating lights (often flashing) and the vessel will display red over white operating lights. Please exercise caution when navigating our local area waters during these months especially during nighttime travels.

Between five and 20 boats are expected to participate in daily fishing activities, although there may be additional set-nets anchored in-water.  The majority of Tribal fishing activities will be concentrated between Port Orchard and the Bremerton ferry dock. At night, a red over white light signifies an active commercial fishing vessel. To avoid nets, it is recommended you steer towards the fishing vessel who will assist in directing you around any nets.  Spotting the small floating white corks of a net can be difficult even in good visibility; slow down is also good advice. Net replacement can be expensive and boaters may be “on the hook” for any damage caused to an actively fishing tribal net or boat.

The Suquamish Tribe appreciates your understanding and assistance with helping to make our shared waterways as safe and friendly as possible.

Also, for those who are interested, freshly caught salmon may be for sale at the Port Orchard public boat launch or other locations along the roadside daily (times/days may vary). Prices and quality depend on the individual fisher and availability depends on Mother Nature.

If you would like more information regarding Sinclair salmon fishing, please call the Suquamish Fisheries office at (360) 394-8445.

Happy fishing and boating to all!

Concert line up

July 4, 8-10 p.m.: Left Hand Smoke – Rock n Roll – lefthandsmoke.com

Left Hand Smoke’s Sound is fresh, combining groovy, guitar and keyboard-driven, melodies with a hard hitting, rock n roll edge. Dylan and the Band, the Stones, Van Morrison, Otis Redding, James Brown, the Meters, and Little Feat all contributed to their jazzy, bluesy, folksy, funky sound. According to All Music, “Will Mish is one of the best guitarists ever to emerge from the Northwest.”

July 11, 5-7 p.m.: Aaron Crawford

Aaron Crawford is one of the most talked about artists coming out of the Seattle music scene right now. He has built a large following of fans drawn to his blend of country and melodic rock. His songs, paired with his powerhouse vocals, and his electric live shows, have rapidly built a die-hard following of fans.

July 18, 5-7 p.m.: No concert. Bremerton Summer Brewfest

The concert series takes a break on July 18 but there’s still plenty of fun to be had on the waterfront at the Bremerton Summer Brewfest which features 30 Washington breweries pouring more than 100 craft beers and will include music.

July 25 5-7 p.m.: Vaudeville Etiquette

Vaudeville Etiquette makes music that pushes every boundary with raw passion, grit, and mischievous wit. With their signature blend of Americana roots rock, the dynamic Seattle quintet fills timeless melodies with modern lyrics, heady harmonies, and a wailing pedal steel. Recently listed as one of the “Top 50 Bands Rocking the Seattle Scene” by Seattle Magazine, Vaudeville Etiquette has been compared to heavy-hitters like Shovels & Rope, The Civil Wars, Fleetwood Mac, and The Band.

August 1, 5-7 p.m.: Ayron Jones & The Way

Seattle guitarist and front man Ayron Jones (Eh-Rahn), has become one of Seattle’s hottest up-and-comers with his brand of Seattle Rock. Sir Mix A lot has called him ‘the future of rock.’ Jones has taken a hybrid style of guitar playing, in which the chord and solo are played at the same time, and infused the raw energy of punk with the inner-city attitude of Hip-Hop. Think Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Nirvana. The band has opened for the legendary B.B. King and Presidents of the United States of America among others.

August 8, 5-7 p.m.: Sea of Misinformation

After the release of “Happy Songs For An Unhappy World” five years ago, Ryan Giffin and his songs exploded onto the Northwest music scene by placing within the top four of the Seattle Wave Radio Challenge. According to International Pop Overthrow Festival, “They’ve got a high energy in-your-face alt-rock attack tempered by pop melodies that will leave you mesmerized and begging for more! Think Judas Priest meets The Beatles meets Death Cab for Cutie hanging out with David Bowie, and you begin to get the picture… Definitely one of Seattle’s finest!”

August 15, 5-7 p.m.: Electric Bards

The Electric Bards play all original music. Many of their songs use the words of 17th, 18th and 19th century poems. The sound is soft rock done in a fresh R &B style. Natalie Poss on vocals and keyboards and John Breslin on lead guitar. Both musicians have playing around the northwest for many years and call Bremerton home.

August 22, 5-7 p.m.: Chance McKinney

Chance McKinney won Country Music Television’s search for the #1 “unsigned” artist in the nation in 2009, taking home the Music City Madness title with more than one million votes in the final round alone. Since then McKinney has opened for Kenny Chesney and shared stages with Dwight Yoakam, Jamie O’Neal, Grand Funk Railroad, Pat Green, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Creedence Clearwater, .38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Known for her raw, powerhouse performances and personable interaction with her audiences, Kim Archer has attracted a large and loyal following of fans in the Pacific Northwest and across the country. Archer’s music follows in the footsteps of great female singer/songwriters like Joan Armatrading, Melissa Ethridge and Bonnie Raitt.

His “Industrialized Country” is a blend of Country music with 90’s Rock, 60’s Motown and Heavy Metal influences.

August 29, 5-7 p.m.: Kim Archer Band

Known for her raw, powerhouse performances and personable interaction with her audiences, Kim Archer has attracted a large and loyal following of fans in the Pacific Northwest and across the country. Archer’s music follows in the footsteps of great female singer/songwriters like Joan Armatrading, Melissa Ethridge and Bonnie Raitt. With guitar in hand she commands the stage playing her own original songs rooted in old school soul, funk and classic rock, sultry blues and ballads.

Don Manning’s script “Closing Time” will be turned into a short film which will be filmed in Port Orchard. The film is a story a love, disappointment, possible redemption and perhaps new beginnings. Four years after a bad breakup, a couple has a chance encounter in a bar.

He said scenes from the film will be shot at four downtown locations: Amy’s on the Bay, One Ten Lounge, Port Orchard Public Market and possibly the Port Orchard Marina.

The schedule for shooting the film is Aug. 3-5, with a majority of the film shot scheduled for Aug. 4-5.

Saturday, July 12, 2014 - 8:00am - 12:00pm

Thursday, July 10, 2014 - 9:00am

This year’s 25th annual Chris-Craft Rendezvous could be one of the biggest ever.

More than 100 boats are expected for the four-day event July 10-13 at Port Orchard Marina, 707 Sidney Parkway.

“We’ve been pushing it hard and for — whatever reason — there seems to be more excitement this year,” said Mike Monda, event chairman.  Monda said normally there would be about 50 boats registered and have about 70-80 boats show up.  “As of July 1, we have 91 boats registered,” said Monda. “We could get 100 or more boats. We never have this many people registered in advance.”

Boats will range from 16 feet to nearly 100 feet.  The event provides an opportunity for Chris-Craft owners and their families to share the pride and enjoyment of the boats they love. All Chris-Crafts are welcome regardless of size, age, model, construction material or condition. The boats are made of many materials, including steel, aluminum, fiberglass and, most spectacularly, wood.

Herb Pocklington, a former executive with Chris-Craft, is attending the event, Monda added. Pocklington will speak at the July 12 dinner. “We’re having more events than normal, but we’re having more boats than usual,” he said.

The Port Orchard stop is the largest Chris-Craft gathering in the Pacific Northwest. It skipped Port Orchard once, in 1997, due to space problems. In the 1990s, more than 137 boats made the event.  Boaters at the four-day Rendezvous put on a barbecue, nightly dances and an awards banquet for Chris-Craft club members.

The Rendezvous serves both the boat owners, and the local residents and merchants, many of whom see a boost in sales during the time the boats are docked in the Port Orchard Marina.

Registration opens at noon July 10 and a “get acquainted” party is from 5:30-8 p.m. Live music is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. with the Michael Crane Band.

On July 11, boaters can enjoy coffee and doughnuts from 7:30-10 a.m. Friday’s dinners is on the dock from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Soulstice will perform live music from 6-9 p.m.

There will be free access to the marina docks from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Events after 5 p.m. are for event participants. The first boats arrived about noon Wednesday.

On Friday, boats will be open for touring, along with a clothing sale, raffle and dinner on the Activity Float with live music.

On Saturday, people can vote for their favorite boats in several categories and a swap meet is planned for the afternoon. There will be an art project for children of all ages on the Activity Float. An award dinner, ceremony and auction are planned at Port Orchard’s Marina Waterfront Park. The Lions Club will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning.

Following this event, some boaters will head north to the 15th Annual Canadian Chris Craft Rendezvous on July 18-20 in Telegraph Harbour Marina, Thetis Island, BC.

Friday, July 4, 2014 - 11:00am - 10:30pm

There will bands playing all day (11:00 am - 10:30 pm) and the playground is a great place for the kids to have fun, plus explore the beach. If you hang around long enough, it's a prime location to watch the evening fireworks!
